Gunnison River Basin & Operations
The Gunnison River Basin, along with the rest of the Upper Colorado River Basin (Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming and Utah), benefited from near record snowpack accumulation this water year. Although most of the snow has melted, the Upper Basin rivers are still flowing at higher than average rates, even in the face of drying conditions (July and August precipitation has been generally below average).
The Colorado River Basin provides water for 40 million people in seven states and the Republic of Mexico. Flows originating from the Gunnison River Basin historically contribute about 17% of the total flows in the Upper Colorado River Basin. This percentage accounts for water that approximately 6.8 million people annually rely upon. No small potatoes.
