2025 Water Education Grant recipients
The recipients of the Gunnison Basin Roundtable’s 2024 Water Education Grant are diverse initiatives across Western Colorado. Each is a great example of our community’s dedication to nurturing an understanding and stewardship of our basin’s water for future generations.
These include:
Friends of Youth and Nature (FOYAN) will fund visits to the Eureka! Science Museum, ensuring that Western Slope youth can access enriching water education experiences without barriers.
CSU Extension will develop water education lesson plans, create kits for water education lessons, and “train the trainer” sessions hosted by Ag staff for educators.
Gunnison High School’s Environmental Science will purchase sets of waders for an ongoing high school science unit that includes water and specimen collection.
Paonia K8’s project includes an overnight camping trip and a field trip to the confluence of the Gunnison and North Fork Rivers. These activities are designed to deepen students’ connections with their environment and foster education extending beyond traditional classroom walls.
Crested Butte Community School will fund three ecology-themed field trips to the Slate River and work with the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL) on the East River for seventh grade life science class.
Last, the Uncompahgre Watershed Partnership is utilizing its grant to provide funding for two field trips for both general and advanced science students and those taking college credit courses through Ridgway and Ouray High Schools.
This grant is just one example of how the Gunnison Basin Roundtable (GBRT) catalyzes educational opportunities and change on a local level. Please consider checking out gunnisonriverbasin.org to learn more, including ways to get involved.
