MURA Approves Over $1M for Uncompahgre Restoration
Montrose Urban Renewal Authority designated over one million dollars to fund the “Connect the People to their Parks and Recreation” project in Montrose. A stretch of the river near Mayfly Outdoors will be developed for recreational use including, fishing, kayaking, SUPing, biking, running, and walking. This funding augments the $400,000 grant the project received from the Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB) in January.
The river channel has migrated up to 400 feet over the last 50 years which destroys fish habitat. The Montrose Daily Press reports that the Uncompahgre has experienced flow modifications and encroachment on the river has caused a wider channel, bank stabilization issues, and a disruption of aquatic and riparian habitat. This restoration project addresses all of these issues and will enhance tourism and recreation, as well. Once completed, this section of the river will join a section of the Gunnison River which connects to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.
