News in the Gunnison River Basin
The Montrose Reservoir, just east of Montrose on Cerro Summit, is to be drainedover the summer for dam repair. Starting on June 11th, the Colorado Parks & Wildlife is instituting a catch-and-keep opportunity for tiger trout, with no bag limit, in the reservoir until November 30th. The fish will die with the draining, and CPW would rather see freezers stocked than wasted fish.
On some more positive notes, rainbow trout are making a comeback at the east portal of the Gunnison and the Gunnison Basin is at the forefront of a revolution to introduce small hydropower into already existing canals and ditches. The Lower Gunnison Project (LGP) continues to move through the planning phase with the completion of the Environmental Assessment. This detailed assessment can be reviewed here. With this milestone accomplished, there is some significant construction planned for this fall. Information is forthcoming on the LGP page.
