Regional and local planning is integral to the well-being of the Gunnison River Basin.
There are several different types of planning and management practices occurring in the Gunnison River Basin. Local planning methods include Master Planning, and System Optimization & Demand Management. Both Master Planning and System Optimization Studies have been recently created for four “project” or “focus” areas in the Lower Gunnison River Basin as part of the Lower Gunnison Project
In addition, The Gunnison Basin Implementation Plan is a regional planning effort and covers the entire Gunnison Basin; it is an part of the Colorado Water Plan that covers the entire state of Colorado.
Lastly, there are planning efforts for the entire Colorado River Basin, in which the Gunnison River plays a big role. These include the “Colorado River Basin Water Supply and Demand Study (aka Colorado River Basin Study)” and the on-going “Drought Contingency Plan” for the Colorado River Basin.
